Voyeurism is a practice in which a person derives sexual pleasure from observing other people's private body parts. Such people may be in the nude or doing sex acts. They may also be in underwear or dressing up. The word voyeurism comes from the French word voir meaning to see with the -uer suffix that translates as -er in English. The literal translation would be “observer” or “seer”
- A voyeur may also be called a peeping tom, pervert or perv.

The practice of voyeurism may take a number of styles and techniques. The object of the voyeurism is often unaware of the activity so the voyeur is usually undetected. A voyeur may use certain gadgets or apparatus that will aid them in their voyeuristic activities. Some people may watch from a distance using telescopes or binoculars. Mirrors that reflects the images of other people are also used. Modern technologies like video cameras and camera phones also help in voyeuristic activities. The voyeur often engages in masturbation while he or she is in the act of “observing”.

A subset of voyeurism is gaining popularity today. Upskirt and downblouse is gaining a wide audience in Internet pornography. Upskirt refers to camera shots taken from underneath a skirt. Upskirt shots often feature a female's underwear, but sometimes it also shows the butt and the vagina. Downblouse on the other hand features shot taken from taken the head of the female and it shows the chest area of the subject. These kinds of shots may show the subject's underwear or bra and/or the breasts and nipples. A lot of popular pornography websites specialize in upskirt and downblouse shots.

Voyeurism is a very deviant behavior and it is sometimes punishable by the law depending on the jurisdiction. For the voyeur, it is part of the thrill to risk being caught. If the act of voyeurism is non-consensual, it is often punishable by the law. Non-consensual voyeurism is a criminal offense in the United Kingdom and it is considered a sexual offense in Canada. Some institutions such as gyms, health clubs and schools set up rules and regulations regarding the use of camera phones in order to minimize the occurrence of voyeuristic acts.
